There are 3 kinds of ants in a colony: the queen, the female and male workers.
The queen and the males have wings, while the workers don’t have wings, the queen is the only ant that can lay eggs.
The male ant’s job is to mate with the future queen ants and they do not live very long afterward. Once the queen grows to adulthood she spends the rest of her life laying eggs depending on the species a colony may have one queen or many queens.

Argentine Ants:

Their size is about 1 1/16 to ¼, color dark brown, 6 legs, and the shape is oval.
These type of ants are located in wet environments near a food source; covering entire habitats, such as an entire garden or your whole backyard.

Carpenter Ants:

These ants get the name because they built their nests in wood.
This pest can cause significant damage to your house. There are many types of carpenter ants throughout the US measuring in size from one-quarter inch for worker carpenter ants, to three-quarters of an inch for queen carpenter ants.
The habitat for carpenter ants build nests anywhere they can find water and moldy or damp wood such as tree stumps, firewood or in the plants around your house. If found inside usually they enter buildings through wet, damaged wood, although it isn’t uncommon for them to adapt to drier places.

Pavement Ants:

They get their name because they make their nests in or under cracks in the pavement. Typically found in the eastern half of the US.
Size: 1/8 inch, shape oval, and color dark brown to black.

Odorous House ants:

They get their name because of the strong odor like a rotten coconut, and commonly nest outdoors in the soil under stones, logs, mulch, debris, and other items. They will also nest indoors in wall and floor voids, particularly in moist or warm areas. If only a few workers (wingless ants) are observed in the house it is an indication that they are nesting outdoors and entering the house in search of food. If winged swarmers are found indoors, or if workers are consistently seen in great abundance, it likely indicates they are nesting within the house.
Size: 1/16 to 1/8 inches, oval shape, color brown to black.
Control of odorous house ants should begin with an attempt to locate the origin of the ants. Careful and frequent observation may be necessary to develop an opinion about the source. Ants entering from outdoors can be discouraged by sealing as many cracks and gaps in exterior walls as possible.
