Mosquitoes: Who and What Attracts them?

This may seem strange but the truth is, some people, and things, are more attractive to mosquitoes than others. Mosquitoes hardly bite people at random; they have ‘tastes.’ So, in this article, we are going to discuss some of the things that will make you less attractive to mosquitoes.

If you generate much heat:

Mosquitoes feed on blood, and it is only natural that they get attracted by heat. They can pick thermal sensory information, and if you exude more heat than people around you, then you will more likely get bitten. You will most likely generate more heat than usual if you are obese, wear a lot of joggers, or you are a pregnant woman in the later stages of pregnancies.

Alcohol Intake:

A Japanese study has shown that people who consumed beers and alcohol appears to be more attractive to mosquitoes. The science behind this is that mosquitoes are drawn to the increase in body temperature and also the increase in the alcohol content contained in body sweat.

Chemicals and Carbon dioxide in the breath:

It is common knowledge that carbon dioxide attracts mosquitoes, but not a lot of people knows that certain chemicals in the breath also attract mosquitoes too. How it works is that these chemicals work as the secondary stimulants that make this creature stick after they must have been initially drawn by the carbon dioxide.

Things Mosquitoes are attracted by.

We have considered some of the factors that make people attracted to mosquitoes; now we will look at some of the things that also provides great allures for mosquitoes as well.

Yard Flowers:

Some mosquitoes breeds eat nectar as they do blood. What this means is that the more flowers you have in your yard, the more mosquitoes you are likely going harbor.
Mosquitoes also breed in plants that allow water to gather in pockets and troughs. And newsflash, there are many types of plants of these types.

Uncultured grass and weeds.

This point goes without saying. Tall grass, weeds, and shrubs provide shelter and protection for mosquitoes from the midday sun. Thus, if you have more of these in your yard, you will have more mosquitoes hanging around with you.

A stagnant body of water:

Everyone should know this, but it doesn’t hurt at all to reiterate it once more. Whether it is a bird bath, clogged gutter or anything that holds water, you should endeavor to remove or clear out such.

Please take the time to learn measures to make yourself less attractive to mosquitoes, how to prevent bites, and how to remove attractants elements from your yard. Mosquitoes are a serious threat to personal and community health, but together we can protect ourselves, our families, our communities, and our country.
